Check-ins

How do I check in a habit?

Tap the circle next to any habit on the home screen. A soft haptic confirms the check-in, and the seismograph updates to reflect the new rate. You can also check in from the habit detail view, or from your Apple Watch.

Can I undo a check-in?

Yes. Long-press the check-in circle on the habit detail view to remove today's check-in. Alternatively, go to the habit detail, tap the check-in target, and use the undo option that appears.

Can I log a check-in for a past day?

Yes. Open the habit detail and tap any past day on the calendar strip. Retroactive check-ins are fully supported — there is no edit lockout.

What if I accidentally check in twice?

Cadence is idempotent — a habit is either done or not done on a given day. Tapping the check-in circle a second time has no effect. There is no way to double-count a day.

The Seismograph

What does the seismograph show?

The seismograph is your windowed completion rate over a trailing 14-day window, rendered as a continuous flowing curve. When you're checking in consistently, the curve rises. When you miss days, it dips. It never resets.

The number shown — "11 of last 14" — is the literal count of days in the past 14 that you checked in for that habit.

What do the trend labels mean?

Cadence shows one of three trend states, based on how your current rate compares to your rate from seven days ago:

  • Rising — your rate has increased by more than 7%
  • Holding — your rate is within ±7% of where it was
  • Drifting — your rate has decreased by more than 7%

New habits show a "New" label for the first 7 days while your rate is still settling in.

Why 14 days? Can I change it?

The 14-day window is a deliberate design choice, not a setting. It's long enough to smooth out individual missed days without making the rate feel slow to respond. The window length is fixed — this is the opinion the product is built around.

Habits

How do I create a habit?

Tap the + button on the home screen. Give the habit a name, set a frequency (daily, or a specific number of days per week), and choose a colour band. That's it — three taps, no categories, no descriptions, no targets.

How do I edit or delete a habit?

Open the habit detail and tap Edit. You can change the name, frequency, and colour at any time. To remove a habit, use Archive — this preserves your history in the year view. Delete is a secondary action in the archive view and removes everything permanently.

How do I reorder my habits?

Long-press and drag any habit on the home screen to reorder. Changes are saved immediately.

How many habits can I have?

Free users can have up to 5 active habits. Pro users have no limit, though Cadence shows a one-time advisory at 10 or more habits — having too many habits to track is its own kind of problem.

Year View

What is the year view?

The year view is a Pro feature that shows a 365-day seismograph for each habit, stacked vertically against an atmospheric backdrop. It's the complete picture of your year — every habit, every dip and rise, from January to December.

At the top, a marquee number shows your total fraction across all habits for the year — e.g. "823 of 1,228 across all habits".

How do I access the year view?

Tap Year in the tab bar. If you're on the free tier, you'll see a prompt to upgrade to Pro to unlock it.

Widgets

What widgets does Cadence offer?

Cadence has four widget sizes:

  • Small (free) — one habit, fraction in serif, 14-day mini seismograph, trend dot
  • Medium (Pro) — one habit, 30-day seismograph with fill
  • Large (Pro) — three habits stacked, each with mini seismograph and fraction
  • Lock Screen (Pro) — circular complication with fraction
How do I add the widget to my home screen?

Long-press your iPhone home screen until the icons wiggle. Tap the + button at the top left, search for Cadence, and select the size you want. Tap on the widget after placing it to configure which habit it shows.

Apple Watch

What does the Apple Watch app do?

The watch app shows your full habit list with a mini seismograph and trend dot for each habit. Tap any habit to check in with a single tap. The habit detail view shows the seismograph and your current rate.

In v1.0 the watch requires a paired iPhone and communicates via WatchConnectivity.

How do I add Cadence complications?

Complications are a Pro feature. On your Apple Watch, long-press the watch face and tap Edit. Select a complication slot and find Cadence in the list. Two complication styles are available: a circular fraction with a dot, and a rectangular fraction with a 14-day mini trace.

Reminders

How do I set a reminder for a habit?

Open the habit detail and tap Edit. Enable the reminder toggle and set a time. By default, the reminder notification shows only the habit name. You can customise the reminder text (up to 60 characters) in the habit editor.

Will I get a reminder if I've already checked in?

No. Reminders are automatically suppressed if you've already checked in for that habit today. Cadence will never remind you about something you've already done.

Will Cadence ever remind me about missed days?

No. Reminders in Cadence report the habit name only — never missed days, drifting rates, or pressure to act. This is intentional and not configurable. If a fitness app would say it, Cadence won't.

Sync & Data

How does iCloud sync work?

Sync is a Pro feature. It uses your private iCloud account (CloudKit) to keep your habits and check-ins in sync across your iPhone and Apple Watch. There is no Cadence server — the developer cannot see your data. Sync is automatic once you're on Pro.

You can enable or disable sync at any time from Settings → iCloud Sync.

Does Cadence work offline?

Yes. Check-ins save locally immediately. On Pro, CloudKit queues changes and syncs when you're back online. Your habits and history are always available whether or not you have a connection.

How do I export my data?

Go to Settings → Export Data to export all your habits and check-ins as a JSON file. This is available on both the free tier and Pro.

How do I delete all my data?

Go to Settings → Delete All Data. Two confirmations are required. On Pro, deletion propagates through CloudKit to your other signed-in devices. This cannot be undone.

Subscription & Pro

What does Cadence Pro include?

Pro unlocks:

  • Unlimited habits
  • Year view (365-day seismograph per habit)
  • iCloud sync across your iPhone and Apple Watch
  • Medium, large, and Lock Screen widgets
  • Apple Watch complications (two styles)
  • Alternate app icons (six atmospheric variants)
How much does Pro cost?

$2.49/month, $19.99/year (with a 7-day free trial for new subscribers), or $39.99 as a one-time lifetime purchase. The lifetime tier exists because a habit tracker shouldn't nag you with recurring billing. Prices are shown in your local currency at purchase time.

What happens to my habits if I hit the 5-habit free limit?

Nothing is deleted. When you try to create a sixth habit, Cadence will prompt you to upgrade. Your existing five habits remain fully accessible. You can archive or delete a habit to make room, or upgrade to Pro to continue adding.

How do I restore a previous purchase?

Go to Settings → Account and tap Restore Purchases. Make sure you're signed in to the same Apple ID that made the original purchase.

How do I cancel my subscription?

Subscriptions are managed through Apple. On your iPhone, go to Settings → [your name] → Subscriptions, find Cadence, and tap Cancel. Your Pro features remain active until the end of your current billing period. The lifetime purchase is permanent and cannot be cancelled.

What happens to my data if my Pro subscription lapses?

Nothing is deleted. Your habits and full check-in history remain. You'll lose access to sync, the year view, medium and large widgets, and watch complications. Re-subscribing restores everything instantly.
