Privacy Policy
1. Who We Are
Commonplace is developed and published by Jamie Newman ("we", "us", "our"). If you have any questions about this policy, contact us at contact@jamie-newman.com.
2. Information We Collect
Commonplace collects minimal data:
- Quotes, books, and tags you create. This content is stored locally on your device using SQLite and, for Pro subscribers, synced to your private iCloud account via Apple CloudKit.
- Anonymous usage analytics. We use PostHog (hosted in the EU) to collect aggregate, anonymised events such as app opens, feature usage, and paywall interactions. No personally identifiable information is attached to these events. Device identifiers are used only to de-duplicate sessions and are not linked to your identity.
- Subscription status. We use RevenueCat to manage in-app purchases. RevenueCat may collect your Apple-issued subscriber identifier and purchase history to verify entitlements. See RevenueCat's privacy policy for details.
3. How We Use Your Information
- To provide the core functionality of the app (storing and retrieving your quotes).
- To sync your library across your devices via iCloud (Pro subscribers only).
- To understand how the app is used so we can improve it (anonymous analytics).
- To verify your subscription status and unlock Pro features.
4. Third-Party Services
- iCloud / CloudKit (Apple). Sync is powered by Apple CloudKit. Your quote data is stored in your private iCloud account and is not accessible to us. Governed by Apple's Privacy Policy.
- RevenueCat. Handles subscription management. See RevenueCat's Privacy Policy.
- PostHog. Anonymous event analytics, EU-hosted. See PostHog's Privacy Policy. PostHog is configured to collect no personally identifiable information.
5. Data Storage and Security
Your quotes are stored locally on your device in an encrypted SQLite database. Pro subscribers' data is additionally stored in their private iCloud account, protected by Apple's security infrastructure. We do not operate our own servers and do not have access to your quote content.
6. OCR and Camera Data
Commonplace's OCR feature uses Apple's on-device Vision framework to extract text from images of book pages. All image processing happens entirely on your device. No photographs or extracted text are transmitted to any server. Images are discarded immediately after text extraction — they are never stored by the app.
7. Your Rights and Data Deletion
You can delete all your data at any time from within the app (Settings → Delete All Data). Since we do not hold your content on our servers, deletion from your device and iCloud is immediate and permanent. For analytics data, you may contact us to request deletion of any device-linked records.
If you are located in the EEA or UK and have questions about your rights under GDPR, or if you are a California resident with questions about your rights under CCPA, please contact us at the address below. We will respond within 30 days.
8. Children's Privacy
Commonplace is not directed at children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has submitted personal information through the app, please contact us and we will take appropriate steps to remove it.
9. Changes to This Policy
We may update this policy from time to time. When we do, we will revise the "Last updated" date at the top of this page. We encourage you to review the policy periodically. Continued use of the app after changes are posted constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
