The Basics
What's the difference between a countdown and a count-up?
A countdown tracks time remaining until a future date — a birthday, a trip, a deadline. When the target date passes, it either archives (one-off) or advances to the next occurrence (recurring).
A count-up tracks time elapsed since a past date — "3 years sober", "847 days since I moved." Count-ups never expire. They are a Pro feature.
How do I add a countdown?
Tap the + button in the bottom-right of the Home tab. Give the event a title and target date — everything else has sensible defaults. You can pick an emoji, switch to count-up direction, set a recurrence rule, choose a collection, and pick a card style from the same sheet.
How do I edit or delete a countdown?
Tap any card on the Home tab to open the detail view, then tap Edit. To delete, either swipe left on the row in the list, or open the detail view and use the delete button — a confirmation prompt appears.
How do I sort and filter my countdowns?
The toolbar menu on the Home tab has sort and filter controls. Sort by nearest first (default), furthest first, recently added, or alphabetical. Filter by all, countdowns only, count-ups only, or archived. Your active filter shows as a chip below the title.
Recurring events
How do recurring countdowns work?
When a recurring countdown's target date passes, Pend automatically advances it to the next occurrence based on the recurrence rule — yearly, monthly, or weekly. The completion is logged in the countdown's history, so the detail view can show "Completed 3 times."
What happens to Feb 29 in non-leap years?
Yearly recurrence rolls Feb 29 to Feb 28 in non-leap years. Monthly recurrence on the 31st rolls to the last day of shorter months. Pend keeps the logical cadence without skipping an occurrence.
Collections
How do collections work?
Every countdown belongs to exactly one collection — a way to group events (work, family, travel, etc.). A default "General" collection always exists and cannot be deleted. Free users get just General; Pro unlocks unlimited collections.
What happens if I delete a collection?
A confirmation prompt appears. On confirm, the collection is removed and all its countdowns are moved into General. Nothing is lost.
Card styles
What are card styles?
Each countdown has a visual card style — a curated combination of background treatment, layout, and typography. There are six: Classic, Minimal, Gradient, Bold, Outline, and Editorial. Free users get Classic and Minimal. Pro unlocks all six.
Can I build my own card style?
No. The styles are designed presets, not a customisation engine. Six considered options beat infinite fiddling — you pick a look and the card reads like a watchface.
Widgets & Lock Screen
What widgets does Pend support?
Home Screen widgets in small, medium, and large. Lock Screen widgets in circular, rectangular, and inline. Configure each widget to show a specific countdown (or, for the large widget, a whole collection).
How often do widgets update?
Widgets refresh every 30 minutes automatically, and immediately when you open Pend. For countdowns that require more frequent updates (the final 24 hours), start a Live Activity for second-by-second ticking.
How many widgets can I add?
Free users can add one widget. Pro users get unlimited widgets — pin every countdown that matters.
Live Activities
When can I start a Live Activity?
Live Activities are available in the final 24 hours before a countdown's target date. From the detail view, tap Go live to bring the countdown to your Dynamic Island and Lock Screen. Hours, minutes, and seconds tick live.
Is there a limit on Live Activities?
One Live Activity at a time. When a countdown reaches zero, the Activity shows a completion state for four hours and then ends. Live Activities are a Pro feature.
Sync & Data
How does sync work?
Pro users sync their countdowns, collections, and history across iPhone and iPad through their own private iCloud account (CloudKit). There is no Pend-run server — the developer cannot see your data. Sync is automatic and silent; no sign-in, no account.
Does Pend work offline?
Yes. All data is stored locally on-device first. CloudKit queues writes and syncs when you're back online. You never wait for the network to create, edit, or delete a countdown.
How do I delete all my data?
Uninstalling Pend removes all locally stored data from that device. For Pro users, data on other signed-in devices remains until you delete it there. To wipe iCloud data globally, go to iPhone Settings > Apple ID > iCloud > Manage Account Storage > Pend and remove the container.
Notifications
What notifications does Pend send?
A single local notification fires at the target date/time of each countdown: "[emoji] [title] is here!" Recurring countdowns notify on each occurrence. Permission is requested the first time you create a countdown, not at launch, and you can disable notifications globally in Settings.
