Getting Started

What is Mur?

Mur is a daily journal built around one simple idea: write one thing every day. No blank pages, no word counts, no pressure — just a single, focused entry per day that becomes meaningful over time.

How do I write my first entry?

Open Mur and you'll see today's entry screen. You can read the daily prompt for inspiration (or skip it), then tap and start writing. When you're done, your entry is saved automatically.

Is there a limit to how much I can write?

There's no hard character limit. Mur gives you a gentle nudge at around 280 characters to encourage brevity, but you're free to keep writing if you have more to say.

Daily Entries

Can I edit a past entry?

Free users can edit today's entry and any entry within a 24-hour grace period from when it was created. Mur Pro users can edit any entry at any time, no matter how old it is.

What happens if I miss a day?

Nothing bad! Mur doesn't use streaks or guilt mechanics. Your consistency stats simply reflect what you've done — "5 of 7 days this week" — without punishing you for missing a day. Pick up whenever you're ready.

Can I write more than one entry per day?

Mur is designed around one entry per day. This constraint is intentional — it removes the pressure to write more and helps build a sustainable daily habit. You can always edit and add to today's entry.

Prompts

What are daily prompts?

Mur includes 365 hand-curated prompts — one for each day of the year. They're seasonal and designed to help you start writing when you're not sure what to say. Think of them as gentle suggestions, not assignments.

Can I skip the prompt?

Absolutely. Prompts are completely optional. You can dismiss the prompt and write about whatever you like. You can also disable prompts entirely in Settings.

Do prompts repeat?

Prompts rotate on a yearly cycle — there are 365 unique prompts, one for each day. You won't see the same prompt twice within a year.

Calendar & Stats

How does the calendar view work?

The calendar shows a monthly grid with dots on days where you've written an entry. Swipe between months to see your history. Tap any day to read that entry.

What stats does Mur track?

Mur tracks gentle consistency metrics rather than streaks:

  • Days this week — how many days you've written this week
  • Days this month — entries this month
  • Total entries — lifetime count
  • Entries this year — your yearly total

Pro Features

What's included in Mur Pro?

Mur Pro unlocks:

  • Photo attachments (one per entry)
  • Full-text search across all entries
  • On This Day — revisit entries from past years
  • Edit any past entry (no 24-hour limit)
  • Export to text, Markdown, or PDF

How do photo attachments work?

With Mur Pro, you can attach one photo per entry from your camera or photo library. Photos are stored locally on your device alongside your journal entries — they're never uploaded anywhere.

What is On This Day?

On This Day is a Pro feature that shows you entries from the same date in previous years. It's a quiet way to revisit your past thoughts and see how things have changed over time.

Can I export my journal?

Yes — Mur Pro lets you export all your entries as plain text, Markdown, or PDF. Your journal is yours, and you can take it with you at any time.

Privacy & Security

Where is my data stored?

All your journal entries, photos, and preferences are stored locally on your device using MMKV. There is no cloud database, no backend server, and no remote storage. Your data never leaves your phone unless you explicitly export it.

Does Mur have an account system?

No. Mur has no accounts, no sign-up, and no login. You just open the app and start writing. This is by design — we believe a private journal shouldn't require an account.

What analytics does Mur collect?

Mur uses PostHog (hosted in the EU) for anonymised usage analytics. This includes events like "entry created" or "screen viewed" to help us improve the app. We never collect your journal content, photo data, search queries, or any personally identifiable information. See our Privacy Policy for full details.
