Dropping Pins
How do I add a pin?
There are three ways. Tap the + button at the bottom of the map to drop a pin at your current location. Long-press anywhere on the map to drop a pin at that exact spot. Or tap + and use the search bar to find a place by name.
After placing the pin, you'll be taken to the editor to add a title (required), and optionally a date, note, photos, tags, and a trip.
Do I need to be somewhere to pin it?
No. Long-press anywhere on the map to drop a pin there, regardless of where you are right now. Wend is for the restaurant you visited six months ago just as much as the place you're standing in today. The date on the pin is what you set it to, not necessarily today.
How does the location picker work?
When you tap +, Wend offers three options: use your current location (requires location permission), search for a place by name, or drop the pin manually on the map using the centre crosshair. Move the map under the crosshair until it's positioned where you want, then tap Use this location.
Can I edit a pin after saving it?
Yes. Tap a pin on the map to open the quick-look card, then tap through to the full detail view and tap Edit. You can change the title, date, note, photos, tags, and trip association. The coordinates can be updated by using the location picker again.
What's the address shown on a pin?
When you save a pin, Wend automatically reverse-geocodes the coordinates to a human-readable address using Apple Maps. This happens in the background — the address fills in shortly after you save. You can edit it manually if the result isn't quite right.
Photos
How many photos can I add to a pin?
Up to five photos per pin on both the free tier and Pro. Photos are stored on your device (and synced via iCloud on Pro).
Does Wend access my whole photo library?
No. Wend requests limited library access — the iOS "Select Photos" permission that lets you choose specific photos to share with the app, without granting access to your whole library. You can change this at any time in iPhone Settings > Wend > Photos.
Tags & Trips
What's the difference between tags and trips?
Tags are themes that cut across your whole map — food, coast, people, work, quiet. A pin can have multiple tags. Filter the map by a tag to see only that thread.
Trips group pins that belong to the same journey — Lisbon, late autumn; Paris, between trains. A pin belongs to one trip at most. Trips have a name, date range, and optional cover photo.
Both are optional. Pins work fully without either.
How do I create a tag?
From the pin editor, tap the tags field and type a new tag name. Wend adds it to your tag library. You can also manage tags from Settings > Tags.
How do I create a trip?
Tap the trip field in the pin editor and choose New trip. Give it a name and optional dates. Alternatively, go to the Trips tab from the map view. Once a trip exists, tap any pin's trip field and select it.
The Map
What map styles are available?
Free: Dusk — the default style, Wend's brand palette. A muted, atmospheric rendering that lets pins read clearly without competing for attention.
Pro: five styles total — Dusk, Dawn (warm, morning-leaning), Paper (high-contrast cartographic), Ink (near-monochrome, contemplative), and Topographic (terrain emphasis, for walkers and hikers).
How do I switch map styles?
Tap the layer icon in the floating control pill at the bottom-right of the map view. Free users see the Dusk style selected with a Pro badge on the other options. Pro users can switch freely.
How do I filter what's on the map?
Tap the filter icon in the floating control pill. You can filter by tag, trip, year, and date range. The map updates to show only matching pins. Tap Clear to remove all filters.
Search
What can I search?
Search across pin titles, notes, and addresses. Results appear in a list view sorted by relevance. Tap a result to jump to that pin on the map.
How do I sort pins in the list view?
In the list view (reachable from the search results or the filter panel), tap the sort button to switch between date added, date of the memory, and distance from your current location.
Widgets
What widgets does Wend offer?
Two widgets, both available after you've saved at least one pin:
- Most Recent (small) — shows your latest pin with its title and location.
- On This Day (medium) — surfaces a pin from this calendar date in a previous year. Falls back to your most recent pin if no date match exists.
Pro users can customise which pins the widgets prefer (recency, random from a tag, etc.).
How do I add the widget to my home screen?
Long-press your iPhone home screen until the icons wiggle. Tap the + button at the top left, search for Wend, and select the widget you want. The medium On This Day widget needs at least one pin saved on a previous calendar date to populate.
Sync & Data
How does sync work?
Sync is a Pro feature. It uses your private iCloud account (CloudKit) to sync pins, photos, tags, and trips across your devices. There is no Wend-run server — the developer cannot see your data. Sync is automatic and silent after you upgrade.
Does Wend work offline?
Yes. Pins save locally immediately. On Pro, CloudKit queues changes and syncs when you're back online. The map always shows your saved pins whether or not you have a connection.
Note: the map tiles themselves (the background map imagery) require an internet connection to load. Your pin data is always available offline.
How do I delete all my data?
Go to Settings > Data > Delete all data. Two confirmations are required. On Pro, deletion propagates through CloudKit to your other signed-in devices. This cannot be undone.
Location Permission
What does Wend use my location for?
Only to drop a pin where you currently are, and to sort the list view by distance. Wend requests "when in use" permission only — it never tracks your location in the background, and it never sends your location anywhere.
You can use Wend fully without granting location permission by dropping pins via long-press or search instead.
Subscription & Pro
What does Wend Pro include?
Pro unlocks:
- Unlimited pins (free tier is capped at 20)
- iCloud sync across your devices
- Four additional custom map styles (Dawn, Paper, Ink, Topographic)
- Widget customisation (pin selection rules)
- Export — GeoJSON and a printable PDF atlas by year or trip
How much does Pro cost?
£3.99/month or £29.99/year (roughly £2.50/month equivalent). The annual plan includes a 7-day free trial for new subscribers. Prices are shown in your local currency at purchase time; the figures here are indicative.
What happens to my pins if I hit the 20-pin free limit?
Nothing is deleted. Wend will prompt you when you try to add your 21st pin and offer the option to upgrade to Pro. Your existing 20 pins remain fully accessible. You can delete pins to make room, or upgrade to continue adding.
How do I restore a previous purchase?
Go to Settings > Account and tap Restore purchases. Make sure you're signed into the same Apple ID that made the original purchase.
How do I cancel my subscription?
Subscriptions are managed through Apple. On your iPhone, go to Settings > [your name] > Subscriptions, find Wend, and tap Cancel. Your Pro features remain active until the end of your current billing period.
What happens to my data if my Pro subscription lapses?
Your pins, photos, and trips are all still there — nothing is deleted. You'll lose access to sync (changes on one device won't propagate to others), custom map styles will revert to Dusk, and you'll be capped at 20 active pins again. Re-subscribing restores everything instantly.
