Privacy Policy
1. Who We Are
Chalk is developed and published by Jamie Newman ("we", "us", "our"). If you have questions about this policy, contact us at contact@jamie-newman.com.
2. Data We Collect
Your players, games and scores
- Player names and the colour assigned to each
- Games, their settings (game type, target, direction, round structure), and when they started and finished
- Every score change, round boundary and correction, kept as an append-only log so undo and history work
- Final placements for finished games
All of this is stored locally on your device using SwiftData. It is never uploaded, never backed up to a server we run, and never included in analytics. We have no technical means of reading it.
Usage analytics
- A short, fixed list of anonymous events: a game was started, a game was finished, rematch was tapped, dice were rolled, Table Mode was entered, undo was used
- Each event carries only coarse context - the game type, how many players, how long the game lasted as a bucket, how many rounds, how many dice, whether the dice were rolled standalone or in Table Mode, and roughly how deep an undo went
- Never player names, never scores, never free text, never anything you typed
- Events are attributed to an anonymous per-install identifier generated by PostHog. We never attach your name, email or Apple Account
- Automatic screen-view and app-lifecycle capture are explicitly disabled - the event list above is the complete set
Purchase data
- Chalk is a paid-upfront app with no in-app purchases and no subscription. The transaction is handled entirely by the Apple App Store
- We never see or store your payment details, and the app contains no purchase or receipt-checking code
3. How We Use Your Data
- To provide the core functionality - keeping score, undoing changes, showing history, declaring a winner, and starting a rematch
- To remember the players in your household so they can be re-added in one tap
- To improve the app through anonymous usage analytics - chiefly to learn whether people come back for a second game, and which game types are worth building on
That is the complete list. We do not profile you, build audiences, or use your data for advertising.
4. Data Storage & Security
Your games live in Chalk's own local SwiftData store, inside the app's sandbox on your device, protected by iOS file-level encryption and your device passcode.
Chalk has no backend. There is no Chalk account system, no login, and no server holding your games - so there is no database to breach, and nothing to hand over. If the device's data is included in an encrypted iPhone or iCloud device backup, that backup is governed by Apple's terms, not ours.
Chalk requests no system permissions at any point: no notifications, no camera, no microphone, no contacts, no location, no photo library.
5. Third-Party Services
Chalk uses exactly one third-party service:
- PostHog (EU region,
eu.i.posthog.com) - anonymous product analytics, as described in section 2
There are no advertising SDKs, no attribution SDKs, no crash-reporting service, no CloudKit container, and no analytics beyond the above. PostHog operates under its own privacy policy, which we encourage you to review.
6. Data Sharing
We do not sell, rent, or share your personal data with third parties for marketing or advertising purposes. Your games and players are never shared with anyone, because they never leave your device in the first place.
We do not use advertising SDKs. We do not request NSUserTrackingUsageDescription, so you will never see an App Tracking Transparency prompt from Chalk. We do not cross-reference your activity across apps.
7. Notifications
Chalk sends no notifications of any kind - local or push - and never asks for notification permission.
8. Your Rights & Data Deletion
- Deleting the app removes every player, game and score from the device permanently. Because there is no server copy, this is a complete deletion - and it cannot be undone by us or anyone else.
- Analytics events are anonymous and not linked to an identifiable person, so we cannot look up "your" events. If you would like the anonymous install identifier associated with your device removed from our analytics, contact us and we will delete the matching records.
- You can prevent all analytics simply by using Chalk without a network connection - the app is designed to be fully functional offline, and undelivered events are discarded rather than queued indefinitely.
If you are located in the EEA or UK and have questions about your rights under GDPR, or if you are a California resident with questions about your rights under CCPA, please contact us at the address below. We will respond within 30 days.
9. Children's Privacy
Chalk is rated 4+ and contains no user-generated content, no web access, no chat, and no advertising. It does not knowingly collect personal information from anyone, including children under 13 - the only text it stores is the player names you type, and those stay on the device. If you believe a child has provided personal information through Chalk, please contact us.
10. Changes to This Policy
We may update this privacy policy from time to time. Changes will be posted on this page with an updated effective date. Continued use of Chalk after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
