Getting started
How do I start a game?
Tap New Game on the Home screen. Pick a game type - Freeform is selected by default - then type player names into the Add player field, one at a time. Tap Start once you have at least two players.
From the second game onwards, players you've used before appear as one-tap chips below the field, so setting the table up again takes a couple of taps.
How many players can a game have?
Between two and twelve. With two to four players the bands split the screen evenly; from five upwards the board becomes a scrolling list with slightly smaller numerals.
Table Mode seats up to eight - beyond that the panels get too small to be useful around a flat iPad, so Chalk simply doesn't offer it and the banded board takes over.
How do I change a player's colour?
On the New Game screen, tap a player's chip to cycle it to the next free colour in the eight-slot chalk palette. The colour you pick applies to that game - recolouring a player later never changes how a finished game looks.
Colour is never the only way Chalk identifies a player; the name always sits alongside it.
Can I resume a game I left?
Yes. Games save themselves continuously, so force-quitting mid-hand loses nothing. A live game appears as a full-width Live game card at the top of Home - one tap and you're back at the table.
Scoring
How do I add and subtract points?
Tap the right half of a player's band to add, the left half to subtract. Ghosted + and − marks show the zones until you've used them.
For an arbitrary amount - a big card-game hand, a darts turn - long-press the band to open a stepper where you can type a number and choose Add or Subtract.
What are the four game types?
- Freeform - the default. Points go up by one per tap, and you decide when the game is over by tapping Finish.
- Race to Target - first to the target wins, and Chalk finishes the game automatically. Presets of 500 and 121, or set your own.
- Countdown - start at 501 or 301 and count down to exactly zero. Scores are entered per turn.
- Rounds - enter each player's score for the round, with running totals on the board. At the end, either the highest or the lowest total wins - your choice when you set the game up.
How do rounds work?
In a Rounds game the current round number sits in a chip at the top of the board. Enter everyone's score, then tap End round to close it - the chip rolls over to the next round. The board always shows running totals; History opens a sheet with the round-by-round breakdown.
Does Countdown check my darts checkout?
No - Chalk trusts the players' arithmetic and doesn't validate doubles-out rules. What it does do is notice when a score would take you past zero and offer Bust as a one-tap option, so an overthrow doesn't need unpicking by hand.
I tapped the wrong player. Can I undo it?
Yes, as many times as you need. Chalk records every score change as an entry in an append-only log rather than overwriting a total, so the Undo pill at the foot of the board walks back through the whole game, not just the last action.
How does a game end?
In Freeform and Rounds you tap Finish and confirm. In Race to Target and Countdown, Chalk finishes the game itself the moment someone reaches the target or hits exactly zero.
Either way you land on the winner screen, with the final placements underneath and Rematch as the main action.
What does Rematch do?
It starts a fresh game with the same players, the same colours, and the same game settings, all back at zero. The finished game is left exactly as it was - rematching never edits history.
Table Mode
What is Table Mode?
Lay the device flat in the middle of the table and Table Mode gives every player their own panel around the edge, each rotated to face where they're sitting. Nobody has to pass the phone or read the score upside down.
It's the headline layout on iPad, and it works on iPhone too. Tap the Table Mode button in the scoreboard's toolbar to enter, and the ✕ in the middle to leave.
Why can't I see the Table Mode button?
Table Mode is offered for tap-scored games with eight players or fewer - that's Freeform and Race to Target. Countdown and Rounds use numeric entry, which needs the full board, so the button doesn't appear for them.
Can I move people around the table?
Yes. Long-press a seat to lift it, then tap another seat to swap the two. Seat positions are remembered per game, so leaving and re-entering Table Mode keeps the table as you arranged it. Swapping seats is purely visual - it never touches the scores.
Can I roll dice in Table Mode?
Tap the dice button in the centre controls and the dice appear in the middle of the table, where everyone can see them.
Dice
How does the dice roller work?
Open Dice from the Home screen, or summon it into the middle of Table Mode. Choose one to six dice, then tap to roll or give the device a shake. You get the individual faces plus the total, a tumble animation, and a haptic pattern that builds and settles.
Can I turn shake-to-roll off?
Yes - Settings > Games > Shake to roll. It's on by default. Tapping always works regardless.
Are there dice other than six-sided?
Not in this version. Chalk ships standard six-sided dice, one to six of them. Larger dice counts and other die types are on the list for a future update.
Settings & appearance
Why does my screen stay on during a game?
Deliberately - a board that sleeps mid-hand is a board someone has to wake up and unlock. Chalk keeps the screen awake while a game or the dice roller is on screen, and releases it the moment you leave. It does use a little more battery; turn it off in Settings > Games > Keep screen awake if you'd rather.
Can I use Chalk in light mode?
Yes. Settings > Appearance offers System, Light and Dark. Chalk defaults to Dark because game nights happen in the evening and a glowing white rectangle on a dim table is hostile - but the light theme is a proper warm-paper design, not an afterthought.
Does Chalk support VoiceOver and Dynamic Type?
Yes. Score bands read out as "Maya, 42 points, double-tap to add"; swipe up or down to adjust the score, and a Custom amount action covers everything else. Dice results are announced. Table Mode's rotated panels expose unrotated accessibility frames, so VoiceOver reads them normally. Text below the hero numerals follows Dynamic Type, and Reduce Motion replaces the rolls and tumbles with crossfades.
Data & privacy
Does Chalk need an account or an internet connection?
Neither. There is no sign-in, no account, and no server holding your games. Chalk is fully functional in aeroplane mode - the only thing that ever leaves the device is a small set of anonymous usage events, and the app doesn't care if those never send.
Does Chalk sync between my iPhone and iPad?
No. Games and players are stored on the device that recorded them. Buying Chalk covers both - the App Store purchase is universal - but each device keeps its own scoreboard.
How do I delete my data?
Delete the app. Everything Chalk knows - players, games, score history - lives on the device only, so removing the app removes all of it. There's no server copy and no way for us to recover it.
Where can I see the recent games list?
Finished games appear as a short list at the bottom of the Home screen, showing who won and when. Chalk keeps the five most recent visible; the full game history is recorded on the device for future features but isn't browsable yet.
Purchase
How much is Chalk, and is there a subscription?
£2.99, paid once. There's no subscription, no free tier, no in-app purchase, and no ads. What you install is the whole app, on both iPhone and iPad.
I've bought Chalk before - how do I restore it?
Because Chalk is a paid-upfront app rather than an in-app purchase, there's nothing to restore inside the app. Re-download it from the App Store's Purchased list while signed into the same Apple Account and it installs at no extra cost.
