Getting Started

How do I create a counter?

Tap the + button in the top-right corner of the main screen. You'll be prompted to enter a name, then your new counter will appear in the list ready to use.

How do I increment or decrement a counter?

From the main list or grid, tap the pill on the right side of a counter row to increment it by its step value.

For full controls, tap the counter name to open its detail view - you'll find large + and − buttons at the bottom of the screen. You can also swipe up or down anywhere on the detail screen.

How do I change a counter's step size, colour, or other settings?

Open the counter's detail view, then tap the Settings icon (sliders) in the top-right toolbar. From there you can adjust the name, notes, step size, appearance, goal, auto-reset, reminders, streak tracking, and lock settings.

For step size, choose 1, 2, 5, or 10 - or tap Custom to enter any value from 1 to 9999.

How do I reorder my counters?

In list view, tap Edit and drag counters into whatever order you like. The order you choose is shared with the grid view and with your Apple Watch.

Reordering is a list-view action - switch out of grid view (and clear any search) to see the Edit button.

How do I search my counters?

Pull down on the list or grid to reveal the search field. Re:Count matches on a counter's name and on anything you've written in its notes, so you can find "Water" by searching for a phrase from its description too.

Can I add a description or note to a counter?

Yes. Open the counter's settings and use the Notes field for a short description of what the counter actually tracks - "only counts if it's 20 minutes or longer", for example. The note appears under the counter's name on its own screen, is searchable, and syncs across your devices via iCloud. Notes don't appear on Apple Watch.

How do I switch between list and grid view?

Tap the layout button in the toolbar on the main screen. Your choice is remembered, and both views show the same counters in the same order.

How do I delete a counter?

In the list view, swipe left on a counter and tap Delete. Deleted counters are moved to the Trash (Settings → Trash) and are permanently removed after 30 days, or you can empty the trash manually.

How do I reset a counter back to zero?

Swipe right on a counter in the list view and tap Reset, or open the counter's detail view and tap Reset in the toolbar. You'll be asked to confirm before the value is cleared.

Can I try the app with some example counters?

Yes - tap the Settings gear icon and choose Load Demo Data. This adds a handful of example counters, complete with a few weeks of history, so you can see goals, limits, streaks, and charts in action. Delete them like any other counter when you're done.

Icons & Colours

How do I give a counter an icon?

Open the counter's settings and scroll to Appearance. Pick from the curated set of 38 symbols - health, fitness, food and drink, habits, money and more - or choose None. The icon follows the counter everywhere: the list, grid cards, the detail view, every widget, the Apple Watch app, and watch-face complications.

Can I use a colour that isn't one of the presets?

Yes. In Appearance, tap the colour wheel row to pick any colour you like. Re:Count automatically chooses black or white for the counter's text, whichever is easier to read on your colour, and it works that out separately for light and dark mode.

To go back to the standard palette, just tap one of the eight preset swatches - that clears the custom colour.

Goals & Streaks

How do I set a goal or limit?

Open the counter's detail view and tap the Settings icon. In the Goal section, choose either Goal (a target to reach) or Limit (a maximum not to exceed), then set your target number. A progress bar will appear on the counter.

How do streaks work?

Enable Streak Tracking in a counter's settings. Re:Count then tracks how many consecutive days you've incremented that counter at least once. If you miss a day, the streak resets to zero. Your current streak is shown in the counter's detail view and on the main list.

Can a counter reset itself every day or week?

Yes - that's Auto-Reset, in a counter's settings. Choose Daily, Weekly, or Monthly, and the counter returns to zero at the start of each new period. It's ideal for "glasses of water today" or "workouts this week".

The reset happens when you next open the app in a new period, and it's recorded in the counter's history just like a manual reset, so your charts and streaks stay accurate. Widgets show 0 as soon as a new period begins, even before you've opened the app.

Reminders & Notifications

How do I set a daily reminder for a counter?

Open the counter's settings and turn on Reminder in the Reminder section, then pick a time. iOS will ask for notification permission the first time you do this.

If the habit isn't an everyday one, use the day selector underneath to limit the reminder to specific days of the week.

What is a "streak at risk" reminder?

It's an optional nudge that fires only when your streak is actually in danger. Turn on Streak Reminder in the Streak section of a counter's settings (streak tracking must be on), choose a time, and pick which days it may fire.

If you haven't logged anything for that counter by your chosen time, Re:Count reminds you before the streak breaks. Counting from the app, a widget, or your Watch silences that day's nudge automatically.

My reminders aren't appearing. What should I check?

Check that notifications are allowed for Re:Count in Settings → Re:Count → Notifications. If permission was declined, the app shows a note in the counter's Reminder section - turning it back on in iOS Settings is all that's needed.

Also check the day selector: a reminder set to weekdays only won't fire at the weekend, and a streak reminder won't fire at all on a day you've already counted.

Siri & Shortcuts

Can I count without opening the app?

Yes - just ask Siri. Try:

  • "Add one to Water in Re:Count"
  • "Subtract one from Coffee in Re:Count"
  • "What's my Pages Read in Re:Count"

The app doesn't need to open for any of them.

Can I use Re:Count in the Shortcuts app?

Yes. The same three actions - Add One, Subtract One, and Check Count - appear in the Shortcuts app under Re:Count, so you can build them into automations. Count a workout when you leave the gym, for example, or check a total as part of a morning routine.

Siri can't find one of my counters.

Counters locked with Face ID or Touch ID are deliberately excluded - Siri can neither read nor change them. Counters in the Trash are excluded too. If a newly created counter isn't recognised yet, give iOS a few moments to re-index your shortcuts, or open the app once.

Widgets

How do I add a Re:Count widget to my Home Screen?

Long-press on your Home Screen to enter jiggle mode, tap the + button in the top-left corner, search for Re:Count, choose a widget size (Small, Medium, or Large), and tap Add Widget. This works the same way on both iPhone and iPad.

How do I choose which counter appears in a widget?

Long-press the widget on your Home Screen and tap Edit Widget. Tap the Counter field and select the counter you'd like to display. The Large widget shows your most recently used counters automatically.

Can I increment a counter directly from a widget?

Yes - the Small, Medium, and Large widgets all have increment (and decrement for Medium) buttons you can tap without opening the app. The circular and rectangular Lock Screen widgets increment on tap as well; the inline one opens the app.

Can I add Re:Count to my Lock Screen?

Yes. Long-press your Lock Screen, tap Customise, choose the widget area, and pick Re:Count. Circular, rectangular, and inline styles are all supported, and each can be pointed at a specific counter.

My widget is showing an out-of-date number.

Widgets refresh as soon as a counter changes in the app, so this should be rare. If one looks stale, open the app once to trigger a refresh. Note that a counter with Auto-Reset shows 0 as soon as a new day, week, or month begins - that's expected, not a stale value.

iPad

How do I use Re:Count on iPad?

Re:Count works the same on iPad as on iPhone. The layout adapts to the larger screen, giving you more space to see your counters in list or grid view. On iPad, you can also use Re:Count alongside other apps with Split View or Slide Over - just drag the app to the side of the screen from the App Switcher.

Can I add Re:Count widgets to my iPad Home Screen?

Yes - iPad supports all the same widget sizes as iPhone (Small, Medium, and Large). Long-press your iPad Home Screen to enter jiggle mode, tap the + button, search for Re:Count, choose a size, and tap Add Widget.

Do my counters sync between iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch?

Yes. Re:Count uses iCloud (CloudKit) to keep your counters in sync between iPhone and iPad automatically - as long as both are signed into the same iCloud account and connected to the internet, changes appear on the other within seconds. The Apple Watch syncs directly with your iPhone instead, so it stays up to date whenever the two are in range of each other.

Apple Watch

How do I use Re:Count on Apple Watch?

Install Re:Count on your iPhone - the Watch app installs automatically if you have automatic app installation enabled on your Watch. Open the app on your Watch to see your counters. Tap a counter to open it, then use the Digital Crown to increment or decrement.

How do I add a counter to my watch face?

Long-press your watch face, tap Edit, swipe to the complications screen, and tap a complication slot. Scroll to Re:Count and you'll see one entry per counter, by name, plus a "Most Recent" option. Circular, rectangular, inline, and corner styles are all supported.

Complications show the counter's value with its goal ring and streak; tapping one opens the app. If your counters aren't listed yet, open Re:Count on the Watch once so it can sync from your iPhone.

My Watch and iPhone counters are out of sync. What should I do?

The Watch syncs directly with your iPhone rather than through iCloud, so both need to be within range of each other, with Bluetooth or shared Wi-Fi available. Sync usually takes a few seconds.

If they still disagree, open the app on both devices - the iPhone is the source of truth and will push its counters across. Opening the counter's history view reconciles the event log. If the problem persists, force-quit and reopen the app on both devices.

iCloud Sync

How does iCloud sync work?

Re:Count uses Apple's CloudKit to sync your counters across your iPhone and iPad automatically. No account or setup is required - as long as you're signed into iCloud on your devices, your data will sync. Your counters live in your own private iCloud database, which we have no access to.

The Apple Watch app doesn't use iCloud; it mirrors your iPhone directly over Apple's device-to-device connection.

Can I turn iCloud sync off?

Yes - turn off iCloud for Re:Count in Settings → [your name] → iCloud. The app then keeps your counters on that device only. Nothing is deleted by switching sync off.

My counters aren't syncing between devices. How do I fix this?

Try the following steps:

  • Check that both devices are signed into the same iCloud account (Settings → [your name]).
  • Ensure iCloud Drive is enabled (Settings → [your name] → iCloud → iCloud Drive).
  • Check you have a working internet connection on both devices.
  • Force-quit Re:Count on both devices and reopen it.
  • If the issue continues, sign out of iCloud and back in on the affected device.

Privacy & Security

How do I lock a counter with Face ID or Touch ID?

Open the counter's detail view, tap the Settings icon, and enable Face ID / Touch ID Lock in the Security section. Once locked, the counter's value will be blurred in the list and you'll need to authenticate to view or edit it.

What data does Re:Count collect?

Re:Count does not collect any personal data. Your counter data is stored only on your device and in your own private iCloud account - we have no access to it. See our Privacy Policy for full details.

In-App Purchases

How do I remove ads?

Tap the Settings gear icon on the main screen, then tap Remove Ads. This is a one-time purchase that permanently removes all advertising from Re:Count.

How do I restore a previous "Remove Ads" purchase?

Tap the Settings gear icon, then tap Restore Purchases. Make sure you're signed into the same Apple Account used for the original purchase. Restoration is free and works across all your devices.

I can't see "Remove Ads" in Settings.

Re:Count doesn't show ads in every App Store region. Where ads aren't served, the purchase is hidden - there'd be nothing for it to remove, and the app is simply ad-free for you already.

If you bought Remove Ads previously, it stays active everywhere and Settings shows an "Ads Removed" confirmation instead.

Data & History

How do I view a counter's history?

Open the counter's detail view and tap the History icon (clock) in the toolbar. You'll see a chart of your activity and a day-by-day log of every increment and reset. Tap any day to see that day's individual entries.

I tapped by mistake - can I delete a single history entry?

Yes. Open the counter's history, tap the day in question, then swipe on the entry and tap Delete. The counter's value, the chart, the running total on every later entry, your streak, and the CSV export are all recalculated from what's left.

The confirmation tells you when a deletion has knock-on effects - deleting a reset changes everything after it, and deleting a day's only activity will end your current streak.

How do I export my data?

Open a counter's history view and tap the Export CSV button (share icon). This creates a spreadsheet-compatible CSV file containing every event for that counter, which you can save or share via the standard iOS share sheet.

How do I recover a deleted counter?

Deleted counters are kept in the Trash for 30 days before being permanently removed. To restore one, go to Settings → Trash, swipe left on the counter, and tap Restore. There's also a Restore All button in the toolbar.

Language & Accessibility

What languages does Re:Count support?

Nine: English, German, Spanish, French, Japanese, Simplified Chinese, Italian, Brazilian Portuguese, and Korean. The translation covers the whole app - widgets, the Apple Watch app, watch-face complications, notification text, and the Siri phrases included.

Can I use Re:Count in a different language from the rest of my phone?

Yes. Open the app's Settings and tap the Language row in Preferences - it takes you straight to the iOS page where you can choose a language for Re:Count alone.

Does Re:Count work with VoiceOver and larger text?

Yes. Each counter reads as a single row - its name, then its count, streak, and goal progress in one pass - with "Increment" offered as a VoiceOver action. History charts are navigable point by point, and a locked counter announces only "Locked", never its value.

Counter values and names scale with Dynamic Type, so larger text sizes make the numbers bigger too.

Still need help?

How do I report a bug or suggest a feature?

Tap the Settings gear icon and choose Share Feedback or Ideas. The form opens in Safari with your app version, build, device model, iOS version, and language attached, so a bug report arrives with everything needed to reproduce it - no back-and-forth. Nothing about your counters or purchases is included.
