Three ways, and they all end up in the same place:

• Drag vertically on the big number - up is faster, down is slower
• Tap the TAP button in time with the music; Tock averages your last few taps
• Step with the − and + buttons either side of the number, one BPM at a time

While you drag, the running click keeps its old tempo and only commits when you let go, so it never stutters mid-gesture.

It averages the gaps between your recent taps. If you leave more than 2.5 seconds between two taps, Tock assumes you have started again and begins a fresh average - so you can just stop and re-tap rather than waiting for anything to clear.

The beat row: one dot per beat in the bar, lighting up as the beat sounds. Tap a dot to cycle that beat through accented, normal and muted - the accent is louder and brighter, and a muted beat is silent while the bar carries on around it.

Accent patterns are remembered separately for each time signature, so your 4/4 pattern is still there when you come back from 6/8, and a pattern is saved with a song.

Tap one of the chips along the top: 2/4, 3/4, 4/4, 5/4, 6/8, 7/8, 9/8 or 12/8. The row scrolls sideways if they don't all fit.

At the end of the row is a custom chip for any bar length from 1 to 16 beats - for meters the presets don't cover. That one is part of Tock Pro; tapping it while locked opens the purchase screen rather than doing nothing.

The note chip at the right-hand end of the signature row. Tap it to cycle quarters → eighths → triplets → sixteenths. The in-between ticks are quieter than the beats, and they are part of the same one-bar audio buffer rather than a second click running alongside, so they cannot drift against the beat.

Yes - tap the gear button beside the transport to open Options, then pick from Beep, Wood, Click, Rim, Cowbell or Hi-hat. Beep, Wood and Click are free; the other three come with Tock Pro. Every one is generated in code, so none of them adds anything to the download.

The same sheet has the click volume, which is independent of your system volume.

One bar of plain beats before playback proper starts, so you can get your hands in position. Turn it on in Options.

A saved song can override it with its own count - none, or up to four bars - for tunes that need a longer lead or that start cold.

Your practice time. While the click is running it shows the current session; when you stop it shows today's total. It resets itself overnight - nothing is kept beyond today, and there is no history, no chart and no streak.

Touch and hold it to reset today's total to zero.

Yes. The speaker button beside TAP mutes the click while everything else carries on - the beat row, the haptics and the flash all keep time. It is meant for a quiet house, a lesson, or anywhere the click would be rude.

Check the Haptics switch in Options, then check iOS itself: Settings > Sounds & Haptics. Low Power Mode and Silent Mode can also suppress haptics system-wide. Downbeats get a firmer tap than the other beats, which is easier to feel through an instrument than through a pocket.

Turn on Beat flash in Options: the whole screen pulses on every beat, brighter on the accents. Pair it with the silent-practice toggle if you want the visual beat with no sound at all. If you have Reduce Motion on in iOS, Tock softens both the flash and the beat animation automatically.

Yes - that is free, and deliberately so. Tock keeps playing with the screen off or another app in front, so you can open your sheet music without the beat stopping. While it is running in the foreground it also keeps the screen awake.

Everything about how the metronome is set at that moment: the tempo, the time signature, the accent pattern, the subdivision and the click voice - plus a name, an optional note for key, feel or a reminder, and an optional count-in override.

Loading it puts all of that back in one tap.

Open it from the Songs screen and edit it in place. You can also re-capture its settings from the metronome, which is the quickest way to fix a tempo you have since decided against. Drag the rows to reorder the library.

A named group of songs in a running order - a gig, a lesson, a rehearsal. Songs live in one library and a set only arranges them, so editing a song updates it everywhere it appears rather than leaving copies behind.

With a set active, next and previous controls appear on the metronome screen itself, so you can move through the running order without going back to the Songs tab. Sets are part of Tock Pro.

The free app keeps three saved songs; Tock Pro removes the cap. The limit blocks saving a fourth - it never hides songs you already have. If you bought Pro, saved a dozen songs and later reinstalled without restoring, all twelve are still listed and still load; only saving a new one is blocked until you restore.

It walks the tempo between two marks while you play. Set a start, a finish, how much to move each time, and whether the step happens every few bars or every few seconds. A progress bar shows where you are - "80 → 120, now 112, +4 every 2 bars".

Set the finish lower than the start to ramp downwards. Playing something clean at half speed is usually the harder half of the exercise.

It plays the click for a number of bars, then drops it for a number of bars while you keep going, then brings it back exactly where it should have been. If you drifted, you hear it the moment the click returns. Both counts are adjustable from one to eight bars.

No, it's the exercise. A silent bar withholds the beat from every sense at once: no click, no haptic, no beat dots and no flash. Anything still pulsing would be handing you the answer you are meant to be keeping yourself. The bar-cycle indicator stays on screen so you can see where you are in the pattern.

No. Both trainers change things at the bar line, rebuilding the looping bar rather than interrupting a beat, so a ramp step or a gap boundary lands cleanly. A silent bar is a genuinely silent bar on the same grid, not the volume being pulled down - that would leak a fragment of the downbeat.

It is a single one-time purchase - £7.99 in the UK at launch, priced by Apple's tiers elsewhere. There is no subscription, no second tier, and no adverts anywhere in the app.

Tap Restore purchase. It is in two places: on the purchase screen, and as its own row in Options directly beneath "Tock Pro" - so you never have to go through a sales screen to get back something you already own. Make sure you are signed in with the same Apple Account you bought it on.

That usually means the Apple Account currently signed in on the device is not the one that made the purchase - check Settings > [your name] > Media & Purchases. Family Sharing does not apply here. If you are certain the purchase was made on the account you are using, email us with the date and we'll help.

Refunds are handled by Apple, not by us. Go to reportaproblem.apple.com, sign in, and choose the purchase. If something in the app didn't work as described, we'd like to hear about it either way.

No - Tock is dark-only, on purpose. It is a thing you glance at from a music stand in a dim room, and one appearance designed for that room beats two designed for neither. It is portrait-only for the same reason: the layout is built around a single big number you can read at arm's length.

Yes. Tempo, time signature, subdivision, click voice, volume, accent patterns, the toggles and your trainer settings all persist across launches, along with your songs and sets. Everything is stored on the device - see the privacy policy.

Yes. Every control is labelled, including the ones built from shapes - the beat dots, the chips and the icon buttons. The tempo and the trainer's steppers are adjustable by swipe, since VoiceOver cannot perform a drag. Layouts hold up at accessibility text sizes, and Reduce Motion softens the beat animations and the flash.

If you hit something VoiceOver can't reach, please tell us - that is a bug, not a limitation.

Not yet. This version is iPhone only, in portrait.

Nothing. There is no account, no sign-in, no analytics and no adverts, and the app contains no networking code at all - the only thing that ever talks to the outside world is Apple's StoreKit, and only when you buy or restore Tock Pro.

Entirely. Tock behaves exactly the same in aeroplane mode as on wi-fi, because nothing it does needs a network. Even the six click sounds are generated in code rather than downloaded.

Delete individual songs and sets inside the app, touch and hold the practice readout to clear today's total, or delete the app to remove everything at once. There is no server copy - see the privacy policy for the detail.
